Free School Meals

30th April 2020
Children who are eligible for Free School Meals due to their family circumstances should now be receiving weekly food vouchers from the Government, as part of their new national voucher scheme.  As a reminder:

 - This is a £15 food voucher per child, per week, which can be used at most major supermarkets;
 - This is for children who are eligible for Free School Meals due to their family circumstances and the benefits that they receive, and not for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who are only entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals (although children in these year groups can also apply for Free School Meal vouchers if they are eligible).

If your family circumstances have recently changed due to the current pandemic, you can still apply for Free School Meals vouchers, even if you are likely to only need them for a short time.  For full information about the benefits to you and the school, as well as eligibility criteria, please see the attached booklet.

Further information from Suffolk County Council's Free School Meals team:

Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, we are receiving a very high volume of applications and emails regarding Free School Meals. We are processing these as quickly as possible and your patience is greatly appreciated.

If you are already in receipt of Free School Meals, you do not need to apply again as nothing has changed, and your child will remain eligible until March 2024.

If your circumstances have recently changed and you have applied for Universal Credits in recent weeks, please understand that we are unable to process your application until the Department for Education confirms that you are eligible; normally this can take up to six weeks and may take longer due to current circumstances.  Be assured we check applications waiting to be confirmed daily and will be in touch as soon as you are eligible for Free School Meals. We will advise your child's school immediately.

If you require any further assistance with your Free School Meals application, please call Suffolk County Council on 0345-606-6067, email freeschoolmeals@suffolk.gov.uk or contact our school office team in confidence between 9:00 and11:00am (Monday to Friday).
