It was the under-11 boys/mixed mini soccer (seven a side) County Finals with the top eight teams from across Suffolk coming together at Westley Middle School last Saturday morning.
The Laureate Community Academy boys/mixed team qualified for Saturday's County Finals after winning the Newmarket qualification tournament and the Forest Heath 'Final Four' competition.
After overcoming teams including Saxmundham, Emswell and Hadleigh in the group stage Laureate defeated St Mary's (Mildenhall) in the semi-finals - on penalties, just as they did in the Forest Heath final - and then Springfield (Ipswich) in the final.
The final was a tense affair which finished goalless and also went to penalties; although Laureate missed their first kick, Year 5 goalkeeper Jakub Wolski saved every Springfield penalty to secure victory.
We pride ourselves on our sporting participation, and have won a number of fair play trophies in Forest Heath competitions in recent years, but this was unexpected - not least because there are much bigger schools in Ipswich and Bury which have three or four times as many pupils to select from.
Mrs Baxter, our PE Leader, has done a fantastic job of developing sport at Laureate - we are one of the only schools in the country to have been awarded three consecutive School Games Gold Marks - and I am delighted for her in particular.
It's also nice to see the school's values such as resilience, perseverance and collaboration coming through - we were so proud of how the pupils stuck together and played as a team.
Mr Coote, who coached the team through the earlier rounds, wasn't able to be at the finals on Saturday - hopefully he'll be available for the Regional Finals instead!
